Applecross Suburb

The city of Melville is the home of the Applecross suburb. In between the Swan River and Canning Highway border, Applecross is a magnificent part of Western Australia. Established in 1896, this area houses more than 3000 households. Lionel Lukin was the first owner of this land in the early 19th Century. The area was named after the Applecross peninsula found in the coastal region of Scotland.

Landmarks

As with every town, Applecross has a couple of sites that distinguish it. A community recreation facility located at the former Heathcote Hospital dubbed the Heathcote Cultural Precinct is one such landmark. Heath Ledger, the multiple award winning actor, has a memorial at this center.
Canning Bridge ,Waylen Bay and Raffles Hotel also brighten up this place. A Scout Hall is the most conspicuous feature of the Waylen Bay. The Sea Scout Troop carry out most if not all their activities here. The bay extends from Heathcote to Dundas.

The Canning Bridge joins Applecross to Como. You can traverse through these areas with much ease. It was initially constructed to link Perth, Fremantle and Guildford. Its purpose has evolved over the years to serve the present-day needs. The bridge superstructure has undergone a number of renovations. Its illustrious history recently earned it a place on the Heritage list in Western Australia.

The Raffles Hotel is popular for its impressive art deco. Formerly known as the Canning Bridge Hotel, it was built to provide refreshments and accomodation for the many bridge users. Bennett William, an architect, designed the impressive art deco that was part of an upgrade on the hotel. In the 1950s, it established itself as the ultimate social scene in Perth. Soon after, live music concerts became the order of the day and throng of tourists made their way to enjoy the heritage of this place.

Recreation

Applecross has a cricket club that was established back in 1975. Supporting both male and female teams, the club has brought the members of this community together. The club’s christmas party and quiz night attracts a lot of lovers of the sport.

The Applecross Tennis Club and Bridgewater tennis courts offers another source of recreation both for visitors and locals. They form part of the tennis community of Melville city.
The Swan River is home to a vast range fish species including the jellyfish. Fishing is done here based on different seasons. The fishing locations are mainly the upstream and downstream regions. With the latter having the greater variety of fish species.

In November of every year, the residents host and celebrate the Jacaranda festival. The festival gets its name from the distinct jacaranda trees found along the various streets. Late spring visitors can enjoy their beautiful flowers that blossom right about this time.Art, an invaluable part of our existence, has been well preserved in this area.
